@lymon said in Earl Thomas announces he'll holdout:

Or perhaps, JS lied.....it's been known to happen....no?

Heh-heh... I didn't even think of that! (Smacks forhead) This actually makes sense. It EASILY could have been a negotiating tactic to put that out there.

    Ok... Never mind. Carry on!

I don't blame Earl for wanting an extension. However, what happened with JS? During the draft, didn't he get a guarantee of no holdout from the ET camp? And now he's holding out? THATS my problem. Who knows what would have happened had they not... what... lied(?) to JS?

    NOT jacked.

Sammy - I agree totally. Good movie. I think my review would be invalid because I'm on the record saying I would love any movie set in the Star Wars universe. "Dude, Where's My Car", "Dances With Wolves", "Purple Rain",... All remade Star Wars style. Hey, the musicians have lives too!!

I did really liked that it was a buddy movie. I was always bummed Chewy didn't have more scenes. (Ha, A "foreign" film on Kashyyk about the lives of Wookies with subtitles!! I'd go see it.) Chewy got some Screen Time! It was exactly the direction I was looking for in that, like you said, there was no"Jedi, the Force or a Skywalker." Love that stuff but I want a look into the nooks and crannies of that universe.

For me it was 2nd shelf. Not as good as the the other new ST flicks but I'm definitely getting the disc when it comes out. (Still tactile about my media.)This really isn't a negative thing. Its like A+, vs A-.

(Ok... a little bit of a review..)

    K, I'm out over my ski's a bit aren't I.

I debate for Sh*t I know. Ultimately what I meant was if it came between either making Russ the highest paid or draft somebody. I'd draft somebody.

I was trying to get to what I thought the future should hold in a world according to me. Thats a future that would willfully fly in the face of recent history. I'm positing that the time has arrived that no team with a QB that becomes the highest paid QB in the NFL will play in a Super Bowl henceforth! Matt Ryan's deal has sealed the Falcons fate to years of "almost but nope." Rodgers will continue hamstringing the Packers, then sadly, the Seahawks will not go back to the Super Bowl if they sign Russell Wilson to a contract that makes him the highest paid QB in the NFL. Yeah, I said it!

Also, I say to get a rookie to make your run on because of the rookie deals. A journeyman can have a good year then renegotiate, hold out, or just be a pain. Rookies are Effed! They are under complete control of the team and the 1st round rookies could be under team control for 5 years! If the rook tries anything funny he's putting his 2nd contract in jeopardy. He's got to bust his tail for as long as the team wants him. If he isn't working out, there is another crop of QBs coming up the following year. Meanwhile, Your strong and complete (sans QB) team is still intact.

The big problem I find with your hypothesis is you seem to think quality/franchise QBs are easy to find. Now, we did great with our rookie contract QB, but that I believe is not the norm. A very good QB is hard to find....IMO.

I don't think they are easy to find, but I do think... how do I say this.... the number of potential QBs you can win with improves the stronger your team is on both sides of the ball. A team wouldn't need to identify that great QB coming down the pipeline years in advance the way Andrew Luck was watched. There would be QBs every year that could get it done with all the money spent on the rest of the team.

I'm not sure you're correct that quarterbacks are taking up a higher percentage of the salary cap. For quite a while their price was stagnant actually. The cap has gone up 25% in a fairly short time but quarterbacks haven't gone up by that I don't think.. would need to look it up.

Oops... didn't mean to talk out my butt there. I thought I read it... on the internet... and thought "well this has to be true!" but I can't find it in the couple moments that I looked for it. It may have been something like the initial contracts are in line but the more contracts are signed in a given year, the further out of whack it gets. What with all the "1-upsmanship" and all. I wonder if, historically speaking, there was point in time when QB salaries made a jump in terms cap percentage. If it jumped say, in 2010, then looking at a before and after may be interesting.

But regardless, I'm still contending QBs on rookie contracts is the way to contend for championships and that belief is really starting to settle in for the long haul I think.

Honestly, I thought I was going to get more push back than this. Surprisingly that makes me sad. I want Russ to retire a Seahawk but I know when its his turn he'll want to break the bank. Even possibly go fully guaranteed. I just don't want that for my Seahawks. I don't really think ANY one person is worth that much of the percentage of cap space. So if it comes down to that, I'd say goodbye to a player I was proud of and I loved to cheer for.

    Makes me sad. (sadface emoji)

Doesn't the cap usually go up every year? It's not like the 'Hawks are going broke, nor is this a fantasy league.

Will $30mil (as compared to let's say, 25mil) keep us from getting/keeping good players? IMHO: That is the real question.

Yeah the cap goes up. So does the percentage of cap QBs are eating year after year. I was railing against paying QBs all this money in that post but I think at the heart of all my babbling was to not give QBs a 2nd contract. Ok, VERY hot take, but the team gets control of a rookie drafted in the first round for, what is it, 4-years with a team option for a 5th? I'd rather go that route and spend on defense and offensive line. When the Seahawks won the SB they had a very well paid O-line.

If you had the choice save money at one of the Defense, Offensive Line, or Quarterback, I'm saying I'm going QB because the kid is playing for his 2nd contract wherever that would come from.

I woke up from a nap with this hot take. I'm sure its flawed as hell but I'm rolling with it for now!

No. Not only no.... Hell No.

There is paying a guy what he deserves then there is, for the betterment of the team, letting a guy go for someone else to do it.

After the Seahawks went to back-to-back Super Bowls, I got it in my head that this system of paying rookies GREATLY benefits the team especially when it comes to QBs. While this CBA is in place, as is, chasing Championships with a QB on his rookie contract, with money spent on many other highly talented players, isn't the only way to go, but is IMO, the best way to go..

I'd rather put the pressure on the scouting department to find a next Russ or Wentz. We can talk about how the QB is the most important player on the team. However saying that too many times can lead one to start to believe that money is no object and that he has got to be on your team because if not, that would guarantee a litany of losing seasons resulting in moving the team to somewhere like Mexico City.

The time of the highly paid Great QB being the most important ingredient in a championship team is over. The money it takes to retain them has taken them over line from helpful to hurtful. I see the future of 30 million dollar QBs to be stars of Wild Card teams with 9-10 wins. The future is QBs on their rookie contract, playing for Championships, then being discarded by SB contenders to make big money in Cleveland.

Wrong or right that hot take has been on my mind for a while now. It may just be from nostalgia of the XLVIII team coupled with a strong Eagles team that's emerging and the news that Matt Ryan is the leagues first 30 million a year QB. Matt Ryan of "one great year" fame. If Russell wants to beat that deal he most certainly will. I just hope its not the Seahawks that will be flipping the bill.

Coolio. I'm so happy to be here I can't even tell you! One thing I thought was odd was the twitter handle and the forum name don't match. We got Seahawks Fantable, Seahawks Podcast, and Hawks Cast Forum. Either renaming these for continuity or perhaps getting a seperate twitter handle for Hawks Cast Forum would be a couple options. Having the word "Forum" would hopefully indicate a community and get people to click through to the Forum.

I also would like to see some original content. I mean, y'all can get IN DEPTH on things so writing a few words and tweeting it out with a link back here to the rest of the article/post may increase some traffic.

Apparently I'm all about Twitter... (shrug emoji)

Also, encouraging live feedback during podcasts. Usually I'll see a list of topics y'all be discussing but no TIME to show up for the live event. I was there once or twice but I wasn't sure if you guys really wanted that live interaction.

Whatever is going on, it needs to be brought to the attention of the people. The twitter account needs to actively follow Hawk fans to get a couple follow backs. Facebook (sucks) same idea.

Ok, this typing spasm is about over. Need another cup of coffee. I'll revisit soon.

There has been a lot of talk among Hawk fans questioning the wisdom of drafting a RB in the first round. They say that "serviceable" RBs can be found later in the draft or RFAs after the draft is completed. They believe the running game is only there to support the more important passing game. Star QBs win Super Bowls, not star RBs therefore no need to "waste" a 1st round pick on a RB when 1) RBs are only there to keep a defense honest and 2) RBs tend to have a shorter career in the NFL.

Some good points there but I just can't shake the philosophy of a strong running game being the engine of an offense. You can only drive when that engine is running.

I've been on record here as good with drafting a RB in the 1st. I was thinking Guice but the last week or 2 his hype seems to have cooled a bit. Penny is a guy who consistently got good reviews from fans and draftnics. He was thought of as a 2nd or even 3rd rounder for a couple months now. Sometimes players get slotted early in the minds of people and thats just where they stay. Fans just need to get it through their heads that we aren't privy to all the information a team can gather on a player or what boxes the team needs a player to check off. I read a comment some fan tweeted out about how Pete and John must know something he doesn't to make that pick. THAT made me laugh.

Other than pass blocking I think he has a good chance to perform better than just a "serviceable" back. Penny can run and he can catch. He's got low miles on him so minimal collegiate wear and tear. Durable, No off the field red flags. He's got the power to break tackles, the wiggle to get through holes and enough speed to be a threat to go the distance from anywhere on the field. Teach up the pass protection side and what else could you want from a RB1? Admittedly I followed the Guice hype but learning more about Penny as a result of the Hawks drafting him, I say great pick. Penny paired with new blocking schemes put in place by the new o-line coach may be the ticket to a much more consistent offense than we've seen since Marshawn left. #GoHawks

@veda-the-moor Yep, new coaches will be key. Many players are going to have new techniques and responsibilities that may completely change their performance. LIke having Jimmy Graham blocking instead of running routes. That wasn't utilizing the most effective way he can pressure a defense imo. He's a TE that could command extra attention like double teams from a D. I believe he is much better at being an effective decoy than getting saddled with blocking DE's.

I hope you didn't think I was insinuating the Seahawks could "win the draft". I was talking in general. Media will jump on the next team that does interesting stuff and anoint them as "THE team to watch" in 2018. No, the Hawks kinda got all jammed up with contracts and seemingly poor drafts like you said. I say "seemingly" because the new kids really haven't had a chance to see the field with enough reps to learn and improve. Delano Hill is the guy I always thought about when JS was speaking about regarding players being in awe of the starters and not competing to take the starting job. Maybe this offseason we'll see a bit more fire from the young'ins. At least thats what I'm hoping for.

49ers? I still believe in judging a draft a few years down the road. It gives those excellent players time to regress. Lol! Hopefully a couple fall flat on their face adjusting to their new life and responsibilities. (Thats the lesson of ROY Rick Mirer!) But still, they didn't go on that streak until they got Garapolo. Guy is undefeated as a 9er. Its sickening. Their fans all excited.... bleh.

Serious question: How the hell does Sam Bradford keep getting jobs without having done ANYTHING in the league?? Guy makes BANK year after year, team after team. Kinda hilarious at this point though!

But back to the original question: Are we the worst? My opinion is no, Cardinals are. Seahawks are right in the middle fighting for the Wildcard spot and hopfully pushing the Rams for the division late in the season. A 10-win season is optimistic but not out of the question. I don't believe however that it would be enough for the NFCW title. If we do take the title this season it would be because some unknowns explode to the level of becoming household names. At the moment, I have no idea on whom to place that bet.

posted in Hawks Cast Forum read more
  • Birdfinger

@veda-the-moor Rams clearly took over the NFCW last season but its up to them to prove it this season. 49ers got a quarterback and went on a winning streak so the perception is they are trending up. Cards seem to be re-building after losing their coach. Seahawks had a disappointing season then lost pro bowlers. That is a sure sign of a team that is trending down! But I believe is a a trend more towards the unknown rather than a sure thing cellar-dweller type season.

Its funny, the 9ers get a QB so they will be good but the Seahawks HAVE a QB but they'll be bad this season. Its all a pile of bull-pucky at this point anyways but whoever nails (according to media) the draft will all of sudden be world beaters. So we'll see what next week brings when everyone can come to a group think style consensus as to who the "winner of the draft" was.

Suh talk is just me and me only. You're right Seattle is not mentioned anymore. Im just speculating how the pieces would fit together if he actually got signed by Seattle. I even have a couple more!

Ooooo.... He actually did not go for the most money (Jets), .....allowing the Jets offer to expire has left him in a worse position during these contract negotiations..... No signs of Seattle to report on because Suh is waiting on Seattle not the other way around.... JS had to protect himself and sign a couple DTs in case Suh got an offer he couldn't refuse..... Signing Suh wouldn't be the first time a team has swooped in out of left field to snatch up a free agent....

There is just so many little things about this that could, possibly, potentially, be pointing toward Seattle.

Which reminds me of one more: the video. On the first day he was said to have been getting his release from Miami where was he? Seattle. He even talked about what a big day it could be. He couldn't visit VMAC until after his release because of tampering rules. Miami ended up granting his release a few days later after he left Seattle to go home to Portland. Conversations since then with Pete may have in lieu of a visit.

Ok, I gotta stop there. Its like everything is adding up to 23. Its worth mentioning, I'm ho-hum about Suh a Seahawk. He's kind of a fargging icehole.

With all the stuff he's been getting whenever he answers this question in the past I kind of don't blame him from staying out of it. I think this will be the standard response from Earl from now on. The interesting part to me was that he divulged that he had received a call from his agent that morning and that he mentioned this in direct response to a trade question. I don't doubt he has all kinds of communication at all times with his agent, but mentioning a call when posed a trade question makes me think something really is cooking.
