First week of December and Im getting into the Christmas spirit. Im pretty strict..nothing before Thanksgiving can have anything to do with Christmas. But now its in full swing. Living in Tokyo I dont get the 24 hour movie marathons of Christmas movies..I have to stream them or (gasp) put in the DVDs.
So..what will you be watching to put you into the Christmas spirit or help you share this special end of year time with your family or other loved ones?
I just read a horrible article , utter blasphemy saying A Christmas Story ISNT a good Christmas movie.
Full disclosure, although I saw very few movies in the theater in the 80s, I think I am the only one I know who actually saw A Christmas Story in the theater, and so its always been special to me and I think its an excellent one. The article made some interesting points sort of..about why he didnt like it..
But that scene at the end ..when all the presents are opened.. and the family is in post-unwrapping stage.. exhausted and Ralph is trying his best to not look too disappointed.. and his father points out one last gift.. That scene is special. I like to think most of us have a moment like that..and even if we dont, its still "true". The father telling the mom that he had one.. Ralph getting that one special gift.. after the journey he had to take to get it. Its magic.
Honorable mention to "Elf". The first time I watched that movie it was ..unwatchable for me. But it has grown on me and I really dig it now.
Third place is the 1951 film version of A Christmas Carol. Alistair Sim's Scrooge is the Scrooge all other Scrooges are based on.
On the opposite side.. I dont like Edward Scissorhands. When it was new I did.. it hasnt aged well for me I suppose. Im not sure why that is , but its probably infected with my feeling that Tim Burton is a coward. His early movies were odd and off beat and slightly dark and that was his trademark. And that was fresh at the time. But he stubbornly refuses to leave his comfort zone and thats when an artist can lose his way.
I didnt include Christmas specials, but if I did the correct answer is A Charlie Brown Christmas. Melancholy at times, as all the original Peanuts gang stuff is.. by the time you get to Linus answering Charlie Brown's despairing question of "Doesnt anyone know the true meaning of Christmas?" if youre not feeling anyone you should see a doctor.
